SUWANEE, GA --Two Suwanee parents say they will pull their elementary-aged children out of a local daycare and preschool when a new gun range opens up across the street from it.

"My kids will not come to the daycare after this as soon as the doors open," said Jodi Groth.

But whether they like it or not, construction is underway on the Johns Creek Indoor Gun range on McGinnis Ferry Road in Suwanee. It's going in on a corner next to a Korean Church and a daycare center. The daycare center declined comment, and asked not to be named in this story.

County ordinances allow the business to go in on the commercially zoned land. But they also say outside the range, guns will stay unloaded and never leave their cases. The walls will also be heavily fortified to prevent any rounds from leaving the range.

After the shooting in Connecticut, that's not enough for these parents.

"You don't know what will happen in the parking lot. And I don't want my children 50 feet away from it," Groth said.

Range owner John Straughan is vacationing in Florida with his family. He says ranges like his are strict safety zones, and the demand is high for them right now.

"There are a lot of stories of people flocking to the gun ranges to learn more about guns and to learn more about gun safety," Straughan said. "We do not by any means imagine us being any sort of a detriment to the community; we're hoping only to be an asset."

Straughan hopes to have the range open by spring.
