CANTON, Ga. -- Cherokee Co. Sheriff's deputies said they found an infant who was not breathing on Monday morning, who was later pronounced dead.
According to Lt. Jay Baker, a 911 call about the infant came from residents at a home off Alex Street. Deputies responded, and found the baby girl when they arrived.
Deputies attempted to revive the 3-week-old infant, before taking her to Northside Cherokee Hospital. Shortly after, the infant was pronounced dead.
Detectives of Cherokee County are investigating her death. As Baker reported, an autopsy was performed, but they do not expect toxicology reports for some time.
The parents of the infant were at home, but a relative was believed to be caring for the infant in another room when she died, according to deputies.
Baker said that while the investigation continues, it is possible that the baby died from co-sleeping, and she was possibly smothered by accident.
No charges have been filed at this time.
