(USA Today) -- With a nod to Houston's air history, adidas' 2013 All-Star uniforms and warm-ups will take "take inspiration from Houston's rich aeronautical history, speed and jet plane design."
The jerseys and shorts will feature a state-of-art camouflage pattern and high-tech material designed to increase speed and mobility and the lettering and numbering is based on stenciling on jets. The camo design also "evokes the classic silhouette of a basketball net," according to adidas.
The All-Star game is Feb. 17 at the Houston Rockets' Toyota Center.
The warm-up jackets are aviator-style and each player will have individual patches on the jacket noting that player's accomplishments such as number of All-Star appearances, MVPs, scoring titles, defensive player of the year, dunk contest winner, etc - similar to the patches on bomber jackets. The zipper on the jacket will have an anodized finish that is often used on the bodies of airplanes, adhering to adidas' philosophy of creating apparel that can be worn on the court and as fashion.
"In any All-Star weekend, we dive pretty deep into the city and try to pull nuggets out that really make sense for the NBA ... and where we want to go from a technical standpoint. What's really going to resonate?" Travis Blasingame, adidas' global director of basketball apparel, told USA TODAY Sports. "But most important, we're always trying to tell technical story and make athletes better. We're always trying to make these guys faster, quicker, lighter, all that good stuff."
To a degree, adidas treats its All-Star apparel as a concept car features at automotive shows. It might not be possible to unveil the gear for an 82-game season just yet, but that's the direction it's headed from a tech standpoint.
This year's All-Star shorts are woven, rather than the knit shorts worn in regular-season games. Woven material are lighter, but players aren't used to it just yet.
"The woven short is something we're playing around with," Blasingame said. "The current NBA shorts are knit shorts which tend to be a bit heavier. The woven short is a textured nylon which has a four-way stretch. We can a lot lighter and thinner, but how do we make guys comfortable as well? How do we reduce that friction and drag when guys are in that crossover movement? If we can free up that movement, they're going to be a little bit quicker."
