Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Willie Clayton led four 49ers in double- figures, putting up 14 points, as the Charlotte 49ers defeated the Xavier Musketeers, 63-57, in Atlantic 10 Conference play at Halton Arena.
Clayton , who shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, was two rebounds shy of a double-double for the 49ers (16-3, 4-1 A-10) in the victory. DeMario Mayfield scored 13 points, while Chris Braswell and Denzel Ingram added 12 points apiece as Charlotte won for the fifth time in the last six games.
For the Musketeers (11-7, 4-1), Travis Taylor recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards before fouling out. Semaj Christon also scored 18 points before he too picked up his fifth foul as Xavier had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Charlotte made 11-of-23 from the floor, including a Denzel Ingram 3-pointer before the half, giving the 49ers a 28-27 advantage at the break.
The hosts shot 52.4 percent from the field, including 3-of-7 from long range, while holding Xavier to a mere 1-of-6 from beyond the arc in the second half, en route to the six-point victory.
The 49ers, who suffered through 19 turnovers, held the visitors to 36.8 percent from the floor and a mere 3-of-12 from long range on the night.
