CANTON, Ga. -- A group of 5th grade girls on a neighborhood scavenger hunt for a birthday party were confronted by an older man in a car. It happened in Canton earlier this week.

"He kind of stumbled at them when he got out of the car and said 'you!' as he came toward them and of course they took off," said Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

The girls were unharmed, but the Sheriff's Office is now doing extra patrols in the area to be safe. They said the man may have been angry over something, or had no intention of abducting anyone. But to be on the safe side, they're treating it as an attempted abduction until they hear his side of the story.

"It's disturbing, you get a lot of people coming through the neighborhood trying to look at the development," said neighbor Kathie Trudeau. She saw the girls running through the neighborhood and tried to help. "You just never know, you have to be safe and keep an eye out."

Trudeau saw the car the girls were talking about. She said she was certain it was an Audi. Baker said residents should be on the lookout for a silver car with tinted windows, with the last three numbers of the tag possibly reading 967.
