ATLANTA -- A man and woman were shot early Wednesday while trying to stop thieves from driving away in their SUV.
The shooting happened shortly after 1 a.m. on Dawson Lane SW in southwest Atlanta.
Atlanta Police Capt. Tim Peek said the man heard two suspects trying to make off with his Chevrolet Tahoe and went outside with a gun. There was an exchange of gunfire and the homeowner was hit in the upper torso.
When the woman stepped outside the house, the suspects shot her in the lower leg, Peek said.
The couple was not married as originally reported. Both victims are stable at the hospital.
After the shooting, the two suspects jumped into a getaway car driven by a third suspect and fled, according to Peek.
Police are now working to identify the suspects.
