SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Police say they deal with road rage cases all the time, but rarely does one escalate to this level.

Saturday afternoon, police arrested Thomas Burt for aggravated assault and terroristic threats, among other charges.

According to police, Burt believed another driver cut him off in traffic and began swearing at him. Witnesses say he then grabbed a handgun and fired it into the car, hitting the driver.

The gun turned out to be a pepper ball gun, which is a cross between pepper spray and a paintball gun.

But police say that at a stoplight, Burt jumped out of his truck and shot at the driver with a real gun. He then pistol-whipped the victim, causing injuries to his face.

Burt is being held in the Gwinnett County Jail.
