Witnesses said the bus got stuck on the train tracks at the intersection of North McDonough Street and West Howard Avenue near Decatur High School before it was hit at around 6:30 a.m.
There were four passengers on the bus at the time. The driver, Donna McMullen, managed to get them all off the bus before the CSX train hit it. Nobody was injured.
MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris said McMullen, who has worked for MARTA for almost 20 years, was placed on routine leave with pay after the accident.
Roads around the scene were briefly shut down as police investigated the collision. They have all reopened except for the part of North McDonough Street crossed by the tracks.
Harris said the bus had no known mechanical problems.
