Cherokee County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker said the ground under the 600 block of Stoney Creek Road was washed away in the heavy rains.

Crews shut down the road; it is still closed Thursday morning.

Baker said about 30 homes along the road are stranded. Sheriff's authorities, as well as Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, are looking for a place to construct a temporary road for the residents who live beyond the point where Stoney Creek Road is closed.
