(WXIA) -- It's a phrase baseball fans say and hear over and over throughout the season.

We found that the meaning of the 'magic number' remains unknown to some people in Atlanta, even though it describes the Braves - a team with a high fan following from locals.

The magic number is the number of wins the team must claim to win its division.

The magic number for the Braves on Thursday is seven.

11Alive's Jeff Hullinger explained the formula for figuring the magic number, starting with the National League East standings. He took the record for the Braves (87-58), and paired it with the record for the Nationals (76-69).

Next, Jeff added 162 games + 1 tiebreaker. He subtracted the 87 Braves wins, then the Nationals' 69 losses. His answer is the magic number of 7.

The number will change the next time the team plays, no matter which team takes the win.
