ATLANTA -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal announced Thursday that he has nominated Chris Carr as the new head of the state's Department of Economic Development.

Deal nominated Carr to replace Chris Cummiskey, who accepted a position with Southern Company. Carr currently serves as chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson.

"Chris Carr is respected throughout the state and has built a deep reservoir of goodwill," Deal said in a statement. "I trust he will pick up where Chris Cummiskey has left off and bring more economic expansion to Georgia."

Carr has been Isakson's chief of staff since 2007; he also served as campaign manager of the senator's 2004 race. He has worked for Georgia-Pacific, the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and as an attorney with Alston & Bird.

He will become head of the GDEcD in early November.
