BOSTON (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals are having a tough time getting back to Boston for the World Series.

Manager Mike Matheny says mechanical problems delayed the team flight today. Game 6 is Wednesday night, with the Red Sox leading the Series three games to two. John Lackey will take the mound for Boston against Michael Wacha, who was the winning pitcher in Game 2.

Matheny said the players had been sitting aboard the plane for a couple of hours. The Cardinals had not planned to work out at Fenway Park on the off day.

According to a spokesperson from Delta Airlines, the Cardinals flight from St. Louis to Boston was delayed due to a mechanical problem. Delta has since flown a second aircraft from Atlanta to St. Louis and it took off around 7:45 p.m. CT.

Cardinals fans would say the team needs as much batting practice as possible.
