SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Sandy Springs police have arrested a driver who they say hit a pole and caused an entire line of traffic lights to crash to the street.

The accident happened shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Roswell Road and Glenridge Drive.

Sandy Springs Police Capt. Steve Rose said the driver, 34-year-old John Tyler Smith, was speeding south on Roswell Road when he swerved to avoid another car, ran up on the sidewalk and hit a pole. The impact of the crash caused the traffic lights supported by the pole to come down.

The entire incident was caught on a traffic camera.

Smith and a passenger fled the scene, leaving behind the wrecked car -- a black 2004 Honda Accord with Tennessee tags.

Rose said Smith was taken to the Alpharetta Jail after his arrest. He faces several charges, including reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and striking a fixed object.
