ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Athens-Clarke County police say a crew doing survey work for future road expansion found what appear to be human skeletal remains.

Department spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said in a statement Thursday that department officials are working with the Athens-Clarke County Coroner's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to dig up the area near the place where the bones were recovered.

Sorrow says the remains will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Decatur for forensic examination.

Additional information on how the survey crew found the bones was not immediately available.
