ATLANTA -- Eight families were left homeless early Saturday morning when a fire destroyed half of the Washington Street Apartments near Turner Field. No one was injured in the fire.
Four units were destroyed by fire, the other four by water from fighting it.
Investigators are working to find the cause, but the slightly warmer temperatures led them away from the idea it could have been due to a space heater. Heaters are the cause of many fires during the colder months.
Theresa Jackson was one of the people who grabbed her children and ran from the complex when she saw the smoke and flames. While it's tough to lose her home so close to the holidays, she said she still has blessings to count.
"It's still going to be a great Thanksgiving because we do have a lot to be thankful for," Jackson said. "Everyone is safe, what's lost can be replaced."
