EAST POINT, Ga. -- An East Point couple's home is a total loss after a fire overnight.

The fire broke out at around 11:40 p.m. Thursday at a house in the 2700 block of Hayden Drive. East Point Fire spokeswoman Renita Shelton said the two-story structure was fully involved when crews arrived.

The homeowners managed to escape the fire unharmed, as did their daughter and grandson, who also lived there.

Mercede Broadwater, the couple's son, said his parents fell on hard times after his father was diagnosed with brain cancer seven years ago. They had to cancel their home insurance.

Broadwater said his mother fell and hurt both ankles about three months ago. Her husband rescued her from the burning house, and also made sure his daughter and grandson got out safely.

"God is good," Broadwater said. "(My parents had) been here for 43 years, fell on hard times, but we're praising God today that they're alive."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Shelton said that cold temperatures cause water from the fire hoses to freeze when it hit the house, but crews still managed to contain the fire.
