ATLANTA-- It could be sewer shock for some homeowners in a south Fulton County community. As many as 850 homeowners in Walden Park could be getting billed for as much as five years of sewer service.
The surprise from the Fulton County Finance Department came in a letter to homeowners saying they owed the County for sewer service from July of 2007 through September of 2012 but had never been billed for it.
Janette Harvey-Jones, a Walden Park homeowner, says it could cost her up to $3,000 to pay it off.
"I am astounded. I am speechless. As a matter of fact I have to decide, this is so new," she said.
She and neighbors say they may get their Homeowners Association involved to figure out the next step.
But the 11Alive Desk reached out to Fulton County for an explanation.
They said Atlanta Watershed does the meter reading and billing and the County does the book keeping.
They said a joint detection team from the County and City investigates unpaid accounts.
But in this case, the letter given to 11Alive shows it took 17 months to resolve this one.
For affected homeowners--who have yet to get details----4 years worth of bills will have to paid but the County says they will have four years to pay them. Or, if paid in 30 days, they will get a 20% discount.
