JONESBORO, Ga. -- A 19-year-old manis dead after a shootout with a Clayton County sheriff's deputy in Jonesboro Thursday morning.

The shooting happened just after 8 a.m. on Warwick Drive near Jonesboro High School.

Clayton County Deputy Chief Garland Watkins said the deputy tried to pull over Jalen Lathon Ricks as he drove erratically through a school zone.Ricksdrove into a neighborhood, got out of the car and pulled a shotgun from his trunk. He then ran into the nearby woods, Watkins said.

Police said Ricksambushed officers when they tried to follow him. Watkins said the suspect and deputy shot at each other. The suspect was struck, while the deputy was hit with pellets from the suspect's shotgun.

Neighbors told police about 20 to 25 shots were fired.

Both Ricks and the deputy were taken to a local hospital, where the suspect later died.

Jonesboro High School and nearby Jackson Elementary School were temporarily on lockdown. Clayton County Schools spokesman David Waller said no students were in danger.
