JONESBORO, Ga. -- Clayton County Police arrested at least two suspects overnight in Monday's violent armed robbery and kidnapping of a 69-year-old man.
"And I've just been told that one of the suspects has confessed to the crime," said Major Johnny Robinson during an early morning interview.
David Starkes, 29, was arrested first. Clayton County Police Officer Danielle Rosa said Starkes is the one who confessed and turned in his accomplice, 24-year-old Frederick Anderson.
Both men are charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, kidnapping and hijacking of a motor vehicle.
Police said the victim is still in the hospital recovering from bruises and what appears to be a broken eye socket.
According to investigators, the victim was on his way to work on Atlanta South Parkway early Monday morning when he was targeted by five men who stole his car and forced him into another car. Then they drove him to a convenience store and forced him to take out cash at the ATM.
Next, the victim was taken to a neighborhood, where the men talked about killing him before they beat him, kicked him and took off.
Investigators worked around the clock to solve the crime because it was so violent. They used surveillance video and other evidence to secure a search warrant for an apartment in Riverdale overnight.
Rosa said investigators are now looking to see if the two men are connected to similar crimes in the area. So far, they have not found a connection.
