COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A 22-year-old Cobb County man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for what an assistant district attorney called the "repeated torture" of his wife.
It took jurors an hour to convict Devon Lamar Gilbert of two counts of aggravated battery, five counts of aggravated assault and three counts of cruelty to children.

Gilbert seriously injured his wife -- biting, burning, bruising and scarring her, according to information presented in court. Much of the abuse happened in front of the couple's children.
"The courage the victim demonstrated during trial was truly admirable," ADA Molly Gillis said. "We hope that the verdict allows the victim closure to this terrible part of her life."
Gilbert testified in his defense during the trial. He acknowledged hurting his wife, whose name was not released.
After the conviction, Cobb County Superior Court Judge C. LaTain Kell sentenced Gilbert to 40 years, with 25 to be served in prison.
"When he gets angry and can't control himself, he walks away. That's what a man does," Kell told the defendant.
