ATLANTA -- A group of young people were out early Thursday morning to protest the closing the Butler Street YMCA, an icon of the African-American community just off Auburn Avenue.

Open for nearly 100 years, the "Y" was the center of African-American culture and decision making.

Former Mayor Andrew Young called it home when he first came to Atlanta, and Martin Luther King, Junior and Vernon Jordan, both used the Club every day for sports and after-school study.

The protest followed a story 11Alive aired Wednesday on the "Y" being closed down for what officials called safety reasons.
