ATHENS, Ga. -- The Oconee Street United Methodist Church was destroyed by fire Monday night. The church was one of Athens' oldest.
Assistant Fire Chief Kyle Hendrix said the blaze was spotted by a passer-by Monday at around 10:18 p.m.
Arriving firefighters found flames coming through the roof and a large amount of fire inside the structure. Hendrix said the blaze was declared under control in just over an hour.
There were no injuries reported and the building was not occupied when the fire began. Hendrix said the outside brick walls are still standing, but inside the church is gutted.
Firefighters will remain on the scene all night putting out hot spots.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
