ATLANTA -- Georgia's water needs will double to about 5 billion gallons a day by 2020, according to new data from engineering firm Burns & McDonnell-Southeast.

The unit of Kansas City, Mo.-based Burns & McDonnell said that requirement would be enough to drain Lake Lanier in just eight months.

And the amount of water metro Atlanta consumes every nine days now will only be enough for one day's needs in 2020.

The data examines projected water needs by the energy, agriculture, industrial and municipal sectors.
