ATLANTA -- A student was apprehended after allegedly stealing the letter "T" from the Tech Tower on Tuesday, Georgia Tech officials said.
According to Georgia Tech's Twitter page, the letter was taken from Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Administration Building, which is also known as the Tech Tower.
The letter was recovered later in the day, according to Jason Maderer of Georgia Tech. The student allegedly responsible turned himself in. Georgia Tech Police Department are considering pressing charges.
The mysterious thief is garnering support from students and alumni. Hundreds of people posted on Facebook that they would pull financial support for the institute if the student was expelled.
Stealing the letters has been a tradition since the 1960s, 11Alive's Kaitlyn Ross reports. The last time it was stolen was in 1999.
Some students drove back from Spring Break just to snap selfies at the T-less tower.
It's unclear how the letter was taken off the tower, or when it will be put back into place.
