BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -- One of the largest construction projects in Georgia's history is underway with one of the biggest names in Atlanta history behind it.
Few industries are as lucrative today as youth and amateur sports. The LakePoint Sporting Community will cost a billion dollars to make and will require the movement of 14 million cubic yards of dirt. That's four times the volume of the Hoover Dam.
Investors believe the result will be more than worth it. They've already opened a wakeboarding park, sand volleyball courts that this weekend are hosting a national tournament and baseball fields for youth tourneys .
When it's all complete, the complex will feature hotels, a medical village, and enough facilities for more than 40 sports. Braves legend Bobby Cox is the face of the project, a major partner and its most cheerful voice.
"It's a large area," Cox said. "There's 1400 acres and we're going to have 40-some-plus sports being played here at one time or another. Once it's filled out, it's going to be breathtaking."
Developers say the complex will bring 26,000 jobs to the area. They expect it to be fully complete in the next 2 to 3 years. They are banking on it becoming a national destination for youth tournaments of nearly every sport.
