AUBURN, Ga. -- The Barrow County Sheriff's Office made one arrest and seized more than 5,500 grams of opium while executing a search warrant this month.

The drugs were found Aug. 5 at a home in the 300 block of Oak Ridge in Auburn.

Barrow County Sheriff's Lt. Matt Guthas said the Department of Homeland Security called the sheriff's office after discovering that a suspicious package was shipped to the Oak Ridge address from Laos. U.S. Customs officials scanned the package in Chicago and learned it contained opium.

Guthas said the sheriff's office worked with the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the package to Auburn, where it was accepted and opened by 38-year-old De Yang.

Yang was arrested and charged with opium possession and trafficking. She is being held in jail without bond.

Guthas said the drugs were wrapped in 200 individual packages and had a combined street value of about $2.2 million.

Opium, the primary ingredient in heroin, is a Schedule I controlled substance in Georgia.
