CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. – All lanes of Interstate 20 in both directions have reopened after a fiery wreck late Thursday that claimed two lives and left two other people hurt.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, it happened at the South Van Wert Road bridge over the highway, and involved four vehicles – a tractor-trailer and a Cadillac SUV involved in the initial wreck, along with two other vehicles that hit debris in the roadway.

Police said the driver and passenger in the tractor-trailer died in the wreck.

Authorities were alerted to the wreck at about 7:35 p.m. The GSP said initial indications were that the tractor-trailer and the Cadillac were headed eastbound when the two vehicles made contact, sending them both into the median. The tractor-trailer jackknifed, and the cab separated from the trailer, hitting a pillar of the South Van Wert Road bridge and catching fire.

The two people in the cab of the tractor-trailer were pronounced dead at the scene, while the two people in the Cadillac were taken to Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Two vehicles in the westbound lanes of I-20 struck debris from the initial wreck that landed in those lanes.

GSP troopers continued their investigation Thursday night.
