DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA. -- A chain reaction crash involving four tractor-trailer trucks shut down eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 on Thursday afternoon. One truck driver was pulled from his burning vehicle by strangers and was transported to the hospital with burns.

The accident happened around 1 p.m. on I-20 between Lee and Thornton Road. The trucks were slowing down to stop at a weigh station when one struck slammed into another, and then two other trucks hit the backs of vehicles in front of them, witnesses said.

The second truck was fully engulfed in flames and the driver was unable to get out. Nine Good Samaritans stopped and were able to pull the driver to safety. The driver's clothing was on fire when he was pulled out of the truck, authorities said.

The injured truck driver was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital's burn unit for treatment. He was reportedly in serious but stable condition.

All lanes were blocked for around two hours. By 4 p.m., it appeared that traffic was slowly moving by on one lane. A second lane is expected to be open by 5 p.m., according to officials.
