ATLANTA -- Another round of major layoffs is expected at Turner Broadcasting, and half will likely come out of Atlanta.

The metro Chamber of Commerce says the company employs about 6,700 people, making it one of the city's top 20 employers.

Sources inside CNN say buyouts could begin later this week, with more than a thousand local layoffs to come in September and October.

Any time a company plans to layoff more than 500 people, it has to file a notice with the state. So far, Turner Broadcasting has not submitted that report.

Last week an internal memo surfaced from CEO John Martin promising to enter 2015 a more streamlined, nimble and efficient company.

Maria Saporta, the editor for the business journal Saporta Reports said that loyalty leaves when management does and right now both the head of Turner Broadcasting and CNN are based in New York. They have slowly moved show production there too.

Saporta said founder Ted Turner would be disappointed.

"He liked the fact that they were not based in New York," Saporta said. "He kind of wanted to show the world what could be done from Atlanta."

The city has always been ground zero for CNN, the first 24 hour news network. Former CNN executive Bob Furnad said major news events like the Challenger disaster and Gulf War put the network and Atlanta on the map.

"You had an entity in Atlanta that was recognized worldwide -- one of the foremost brands along with Coca-Cola," Furnad said.

But the expansion of cable news and even the internet have given people more options. There's some concern HLN could be cut completely.

"CNN never distinguished itself as MSNBC and FOX came on the scene they're now suffering from that, clearly getting away from being just a news network," Furnad said.
