COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Cobb County Fire Department's Heavy Rescue Unit credit their specialized training and equipment with helping to rescue two women trapped under the massive trunk of a tree that came crashing down on their house.
Firefighters say their first task was making sure the house, which was heavily damaged by the downed tree, didn't collapse around them.
Once they'd stabilized the damaged structure, firefighters turned their attention to the trapped women.
Lt. Robert Hiller says the rescuers used specialized inflatable airbags to lift the trunk off the women's legs.
Firefighters say the rescue operation was a race against the clock. Lt. Hiller says typically people who have suffered a traumatic injury need to get to a hospital within an hour to give them the best odds of survival.
Once the women were free of the tree, firefighters rushed them to a waiting helicopter which airlifted the most seriously injured of the two women to the hospital.
