(WXIA) – In the wake of the beheading of an American journalist this week by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), more threats to Americans at home and abroad have surfaced.

Multiple tweets under the hashtag #AMessageFromISIStoUS under multiple names threaten additional strikes against US forces overseas, and promise to bring the fight to the American heartland.

Some messages include images of torture and humiliation tied to incidents like those that took place in the early years of the Iraq War at Abu Ghraib Prison, the scene of torture and atrocities attributed to a number of American soldiers.

Additional tweets purported to be from ISIS include photos taken holding Islamic messages and an image of an Islamic flag outside the White House and outside an office building – identified by reporters with Chicago TV station WGN as one at 307 North Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The building is called the Old Republic Building and the 24-story building was built in 1925.

The photo of the Chicago building was taken, according to a hand-written flyer held by someone in the photo, on June 20, 2014. According to WGN, the message accompanying the photo says "Soldiers from the Islamic state of Iraq and Syria will pass from here soon."

Other tweets including the two photos say, "We are in your state, we are in your cities, we are in your streets. You are our goals anywhere."

Americans, using the same hashtag, have posted repeated patriotic messages and posted both patriotic and insulting messages back to the ISIS posters in an apparent online war of words.

One photo, which says the Obama Administration is being soft on ISIS, says, "Do not mistake the weakness of the current President and Administration as the weakness of America. America is as strong as its people, and you'd be making a deadly mistake thinking Americans are weak."

Defense secretary Chuck Hagel on Thursday told a Pentagon briefing that ISIS was "beyond anything we have seen." Hagel said that the nation needs to prepare for everything.

"And the only way you do that is to take a cold, steely, hard look at it and get ready," he said.
