CHARLOTTE, NC (WXIA) -- Dr. Rick Sacra, a doctor with international Christian organization SIM, is being flown to the Nebraska Medical Center for treatment of Ebola. Sacra contracted Ebola while serving in Liberia.

Sacra is expected to arrive in Omaha Friday morning to be treated at the hospital's biocontainment patient care unit.

"Rick was receiving excellent care from our SIM/ELWA staff in Liberia at our Ebola 2 Care Center," said SIM USA president Bruce Johnson in a statement released Thursday afternoon. "They all love and admire him deeply. However, the Nebraska Medical Center provides advanced monitoring equipment and wider availability of treatment options."

At a Thursday afternoon news conference, Sacra's wife, Debbie Sacra, said that she had received word that her husband had walked onto the specially equipped airplane that would be bringing him from Liberia back to the United States.

"SIM's global family from over 50 countries is extremely grateful for the generous cooperation of many agencies and organizations in the US and in Liberia which made it possible for Rick to be brought to Omaha," Johnson said.

Two other Americans diagnosed with Ebola while in Africa were brought to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta last month for treatment.
