(WXIA) -- The US Mint has announced that the first curved coin will be minted and distributed beginning this month. The commemorative coins will go on sale on March 27.

The coins were authorized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act, which was signed into law in 2012. The Mint will issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins and 750,000 half-dollar clad coins. Last year, a competition was held to determine the obverse -- or "heads" -- design for the coin.

The obverse design, which in the case of the curved coin will be concave bowl side of the coin, will depict a baseball mitt. "Liberty", "In God We Trust" and "2014" will be printed on that side of the coin. The reverse (or tails) side of the coin will be outwardly curved and feature the round shape and stitching of a baseball featuring "United States of America" and "E Pluribus Unum" along with the denomination ("Five Dollars", "One Dollar" or "Half Dollar") spelled out on each coin.

Want the coins for your own collection? Prices for the coins will include surcharges of $35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin, and $5 for each half-dollar. The surcharges are authorized to be paid to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as an independent not-for-profit educational institution, in order to help fund its operations.
