ORLANDO, Fla. – Robert Alex Corchado, the suspect authorities said was responsible for a hit-and-run accident that sent a vehicle careening through the wall of a daycare center, killing a 4-year-old girl and injuring more than a dozen others, turned himself in Thursday afternoon.
Orlando NBC station WESH said Corchado turned himself in at the Orange County Jail about 24 hours after the accident and manhunt started.
According to WESH, Florida State Patrol troopers said Corchado had ties to the Latin Kings gang, and that they believe friends aided his initial escape.
Corchado had been convicted of cocaine trafficking in Orange County and had been sentenced to three years in state prison. He was released in September 2012. WESH said Corchado had an open case tied to a December 2013 arrest on charges of careless driving, hit-and-run, leaving the scene of an accident and multiple drug possession charges.
