CLEVELAND — Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary since Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight escaped years of captivity inside the home of Ariel Castro in Cleveland.
It also marks the anniversary of when Charles Ramsey skyrocketed to stardom for his role in helping the women escape.
After the women were rescued, Ramsey said he heard noises and saw another neighbor moving toward the house where Berry was located.
"I heard screaming," Ramsey told WEWS-TV in May 2013. "I'm eating my McDonald's. I come outside. I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of a house."
Ramsey, who emerged as the hero of the day, has written a book about the night of May 6, 2013, and his life before and after. It's called Dead Giveaway (Gray & Co.).
Castro, who was sentenced to life in prison in August for abducting and sexually abusing Berry, DeJesus and Knight, hanged himself in his cell in September.
