For 16-year-old Alexis Carter, fashion is her passion. So when the doors to prom came swinging open last week, she turned to Rihanna, the artist who's talent she admired and who's dress she wanted to duplicate.
"I was like oh my God. I love this outfit. I want to go with this outfit. And I go show my mom and I'm like mom, mom, mom I want to wear this. Look at this, it's cool. I love it. Oh my god," said Alexis.
With the help of a family friend, the teenager crafted the outfit. And at her Hollywood-themed prom, she struck a pose.
"Everybody was saying, oh my god, I love it, it looks nice your body looks good it's different," said Alexis.
Her prom night was a hit until the next day when photos were posted online. Her prom dress got a dressing down.
On Twitter, they called her the "Prombat," complete with altered photographs. Even an edited picture of the first lady.
But perhaps what was most disturbing to Alexis was a tweet from her idol, Rihanna, who posted the photos and a sad face.
"I was very offended like why throw shade on it when you had on the exact same thing. The poses was different but the outfit wasn't," said Alexis.
"You know kids now a days they can be so, so cruel. They take things to a whole other level. Not thinking of other people's feelings. My daughter has feelings. She's only human," said Alexis' mother, Lakeisha Parker.
Five days after the prom the cyber-bullies keep posting. Alexis is now afraid to show her face, but she's not afraid to speak her mind, especially when it comes to Rihanna.
"She don't love her fans like she says she does," said Alexis.
Alexis knew her dress would be different, but she never knew different could be so painful.
"She wore it, she wore it well and guess what, Alexis rocks," said Lakeisha.
Reps for Rihanna have yet to respond to CNN's request for comment about the twitter posts.
