VICTORIA COUNTY, Texas. – A five-month-old child survived a home explosion that killed her 26-year-old mother in Victoria County, Texas on Wednesday.

The two-story home was reduced to a pile of wood and debris.

Jarod Westerman lives in a nearby neighborhood and was mowing his lawn when the explosion occurred.

"It blew out one of my windows," Westerman said. "My wife came out pretty startled, scared and thought something had happened to me."

Westerman says his family wasn't sure what had happened and were all in shock.

"We have a newborn baby and so he was crying, she was crying, and that's when I got startled." Westerman said.

Victoria fire officials say when they responded to the home, they immediately evacuated neighbors and tried to find any survivors.

Firefighters found baby girl Parker Singer, who was taken to Detar Hospital, then later to San Antonio for treatment.

Several sources say the only reason the girl lived was because a mattress fell on top of her, protecting her from the debris.

Shortly after finding the baby, the child's mother - Haley Singer - was found dead underneath a pile of debris.

Victoria County resident Chris Callahan also heard the explosion and was stunned by what he saw.

"I see that a whole house was gone. And the whole block all the windows were blown out, garages were buckled in, and the whole block looked like a bomb went off," said Callahan.

According to the Victoria County sheriff, the baby suffered only minor bruises and will remain in University Hospital in San Antonio for observation. Meanwhile, the county fire marshal's office is leading the investigation into the cause of the explosion.
