Two of the nation's premier football programs have scheduled a home-and-home series beginning in 2017.

Georgia and Notre Dame will face off for the first time in the regular season. The Bulldogs will travel first South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 9, 2017, and the Fighting Irish will go to Athens on Sept. 21, 2019.

"As our football schedules evolved with the start of our Atlantic Coast Conference competition in 2014, we had future games slated with top-drawer opponents in virtually all the major conferences," said Notre Dame vice president/athletics director Jack Swarbrick.

"One exception was the Southeastern Conference, so we are pleased now to be able to check that box."

It will be Notre Dame's first regular-season meeting against an SEC team since 2005.

The only other matchup between the Bulldogs and the Fighting Irish was in the 1981 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Freshman Herschel Walker scored two touchdowns and ran for 150 yards in the 17-10 Bulldogs victory, which secured an undefeated season and consensus national championship for Georgia.

"Playing Notre Dame will be an honor and a great challenge for us," said UGA head coach Mark Richt. "I have a lot of respect for the job Coach Kelly is doing there and I'm sure college football fans across the country will enjoy watching our two teams compete."
