LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have left no doubt that they have been the NHL's top team over the past three seasons.

Alec Martinez scored in the second overtime to give Los Angeles a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers on Friday night that wrapped up the Kings' second Stanley Cup championship in the past three seasons. They join the Chicago Blackhawks as the only teams with two championships in the salary cap era.

This was the 64th NHL playoff game that the Kings have played over the past three seasons and they have won 42 of those games.

Martinez also scored the goal in Game 7 against the Blackhawks that got the Kings to the Final.

Justin Williams, who scored the Kings' first goal, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Since 2010, the Stanley Cup championships have been owned by large NHL markets. The Blackhawks won in 2010 and 2013. Boston won in 2011, and LA has won in 2012 and 2014.

This season the Kings have added a strong offense to go with their traditionally strong defense and goaltending. The Kings, who picked up Marian Gaborik at the trade deadline, scored three or more goals in nine of their last 10 games.

To win this Cup, the Kings erased a 3-0 series lead in the first round against the San Jose Sharks and clinched three series with Game 7 road wins.

The Kings had tied the game 2-2 on Gaborik's 14th goal of the playoffs on the power play at 7:56 of the third period.

When the Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012, they also built a 3-0 series lead and then lost the next two games before winning Game 6 at home.

The Kings have been the better team in the series, but the Rangers pushed them.

Rangers forward Brian Boyle's shorthanded goal with 30 seconds left in the second period had put the Rangers up 2-1. Earlier in that period, Chris Kreider had tied the score 1-1 on a power play goal.

A valuable role player, Boyle has enjoyed a strong playoff at an opportune time. He will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
