ATLANTA (WXIA) – The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for counties immediately west of metro Atlanta through 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Severe thunderstorms have been pounding portions of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas all day Monday, and have drifted eastward. The heaviest storms are expected to enter the state of Georgia during the overnight hours.
The watch area includes Dade, Walker, Whitfield, Bartow, Carroll, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Heard, Murray, Paulding and Polk counties in Georgia along with Cleburne and Randolph counties in Alabama.
Scattered damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph are likely in the warned area. Storms may also have isolated areas of large hail, up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
