RED ALERT morning commute due to heavy rain

ATLANTA, Ga-- Heavy rain turned Atlanta interstates into a sea of red brake lights Monday morning.

11Alive Trafficologist Crash Clark pointed to a stalled car on the Downtown Connector northbound at Freedom Parkway. It happened just past I-20 and caused backups from 166 all the way into Midtown. He called the east side Perimeter the worst commute of the morning. Backups on I-285 northbound stretched from I-675 to Spaghetti Junction on onto Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

An 11Alive viewer reported the ride from Ga 400 southbound from Keith Bridge in Cumming to I-85 in Midtown was a 79-minute ride. That's an additional 47 minutes to the morning commute.

Clark counted at least six spin-outs along I-85 northbound from 316 to Spaghetti Junction.

The Buford Spring Connector at Piedmont and Monroe was shut down due to ponding at 7 a.m., but it was reopened about an hour later.

Georgia Power reports 793 customers without power in the metro Atlanta area, and warned of downed power lines and affected traffic lights.
