ATLANTA -- Atlanta police said all lanes affected by a massive pothole at the Peachtree-Spring street intersection in Midtown Atlanta should reopen by the evening rush hour.
Three lanes are currently open northbound, but only one southbound lane is open. Because of the heavy southbound delays, motorists are choosing to use Spring Street to get around the mess.
Barriers were not in place early Friday, which left at least one driver with a flat tire and a mountain of frustration.
Kourtney Wright broke an axle on the hole and was left with a flat tire. Wright said he is shocked, shaken, and disturbed that contractors working on the intersection left the hole partially uncovered, making for such a dangerous condition on the roadway. He said a lot of drivers could have been seriously injured or worse.
"They just slap metal over it, and that was it -- no support, no nothing. The lady behind me's car actually went airborne. That's how I was looking back to see what it was, and we just pulled over and looked down and checked my tire -- my tire is completely flat. My rim is like bent," Wright said. "I could have died. Like five more cars went over it, and the road just literally caved in. Ten minutes later you could see the concrete falling in. Ladies were screaming and everything. It was just terrible."
Police put cones around the hole -- only after Wright and the driver behind him damaged their cars.
