James Holzhauer: This Jeopardy! legend could make real history on tonight's episode

Holzhauer, a Las Vegas resident, needs only $57,262 to become the second Jeopardy! member to enter the $1 Million Club.

Viewers for tonight's episode of Jeopardy! (7:30 p.m. EST on 11Alive in Atlanta) might be witnesses to history.

James Holzhauer, the 34-year-old sports gambler from Las Vegas, could become the fastest contestant to hit the $1 million mark with career earnings in show history (non-tournaments). He currently sits at $942,738 in winnings.

As such, Holzhauer needs only $57,262 to become the second Jeopardy! member to enter the $1 Million Club, with Ken Jennings ($2.5 million in earnings) serving as the lone occupant.

Holzhauer's indomitable run through the Jeopardy! competition has been the stuff of legends.

OTHER STORIES

In less than three weeks' time, the University of Illinois grad (degree in mathematics) has become known for aggressively bouncing around the board in search of daily doubles (typically at high values) ... and then doubling down his efforts during Final Jeopardy, regardless of how certain the daily victory might be.

In fact, check out Holzhauer's bold final move from Monday, despite trouncing his fellow competitors by more than $47,000.

Holzhauer already owns the show's single-game record for winnings ($131,127) and has absurdly averaged $72,518 over his 13-game stint on Jeopardy!

For better context, a typical Jeopardy! champion would be fortunate to break the $20,000 mark in a single outing.

Holzhauer may be the talk of trivia world today, but Jennings can rest easy with one of his records – for now, at least.

Covering 2003 and '04, Jennings notched an astonishing 74 consecutive victories, obliterating the previous record of eight straight wins.

(To be fair, Jeopardy! contestants had a maximum of five victories from 1984-2003.)

At his current pace, Holzhauer wouldn't surpass Jennings' all-time record until sometime in early July.

Of course, by that time, Holzahuer might have already cracked the $5 million mark in career earnings.
