ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Humane Society took in 35 dogs from the Humane Society of South Mississippi, Tuesday night, to help relieve the shelter as it prepares for Tropical Storm Gordon.

The dogs were all available for adoption at the Mississippi shelter.

"By taking them into our care, we enabled the shelter to free up much-needed space in their facility for animals who will become lost or displaced during or after the storm," said Christina Hill, communications director for the Atlanta Humane Society.

The dogs will be evaluated by medical staff and are ready for adoption as soon as this week.

In 2017, the Atlanta Humane Society took in nearly 1,000 shelter animals from hurricane-ravaged areas. The shelter has an animal emergency services team trained in disaster relief and response.

"When the storm started to form in the Gulf, this team contacted our partner shelters in the regions to see how we might be of assistance to them during this time," Hill said.
