Police K9 diagnosed with cancer, retiring to spend time with handler

Sgt. Bryant said he would never let his former partner suffer.

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Thank you for your service K9 Rik.

The six-year veteran of the LaGrange Police Department is retiring after being diagnosed with cancer. The 9-year-old Belgian Malinois will be taken care of by his handler of four years Sgt. Clayton Bryant.

“Just as he’s had my back for several years and never quit on me, now it’s my turn and I’m not quitting on him," Bryant said.

Rik is said to be responding well to treatment for his lymphoma.

While Rik responded well to treatment, it is expensive. The City of LaGrange has agreed to pay for all treatments needed to help Rik.

Sgt. Bryant said he would never let his former partner suffer.

“He’s worked hard enough for me and the City of LaGrange to get to enjoy the last part of his life.”
