Governor announces second Hyundai plant in Georgia in $926 million investment

The governor's office said the plant would eventually employ 1,500 people.

BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp on Wednesday announced that Hyundai was planning for a second electric vehicle plant in Georgia.

The governor's office said the plant would come as a $926 million investment in Bryan County that would eventually employ 1,500 people.

The South Korean automaker broke ground last month on a $5.5 billion plant in Bryan County that will be a flagship plant of sorts for the company's electric vehicle production in the U.S. That facility is targeted for opening in 2025, and according to officials will employ 8,100 people and produce 300,000 electric vehicles a year.

The second, smaller plant announced Wednesday will, according to the governor's office, produce and supply power systems and charging units for the larger plant in Bryan County and others in the southeast region.

The facility will be located at the Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development Certified Belfast Commerce Park in Richmond Hill. Construction is expected to begin in January, with a target for production beginning sometime in 2024.

“When we celebrated the groundbreaking of Hyundai’s new electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facility in Bryan County, we knew it would unleash transformational job creation and investment in that entire region of our state,” Gov. Kemp said in a statement. “As we announce the second supplier in just two weeks to locate in that area, we're excited to see their impact on the surrounding communities and the growing list of other job creators that will soon follow.”

The vice president of Hyundai's electric powertrain business unit, H.S. Oh, added in a statement that the company's "investment project in Bryan County reflects an acceleration in the development of the EV supply chain in Georgia's auto industry" and that they "look forward to providing high-quality work opportunities to the growing local workforce."
