Atlanta second-worst city in the country for rising inflation, survey says

Georgians have expressed concern about inflation ahead of the November midterm elections.

ATLANTA — Inflation is a big-time concern for Georgians - in a recent 11Alive poll, the top issue by a considerable margin.

According to a survey published Thursday, there's a good reason for that: Inflation is worse in Atlanta than in just about every other city in America.

The consumer information site WalletHub compiled the survey, which gauged 23 metro areas around the U.S. "across two key metrics involving the Consumer Price Index." Those metrics were the consumer price index change last month versus two months before, and the consumer price index change last month versus one year ago.

Weighing the two numbers, WalletHub found Atlanta with the second-fastest rising inflation of any major metro area in the country, behind only Phoenix.

That might not even tell the whole story: Metro Atlanta's consumer price index change last month compared to a year ago (11.70%) lagged behind Phoenix's, but the more recent measurement of consumer price index change last month versus two months prior (1.30%) was well ahead of Phoenix's mark (0.80%).

It was the only metro area of the 23, in fact, where inflation rose last month compared to two months prior by more than 1%. Some metro areas actually experienced declining inflation.

Many of the hardest-hit metro areas for inflation were in the Sun Belt: Behind Atlanta, there was Miami (third), Tampa (fourth), Dallas (sixth) and Houston (seventh). Baltimore was fifth, and another northeastern city, Boston, was ninth.

San Diego at eighth and Chicago at 10th round out the top 10.
