Mercedes-Benz breaks ground on $93 million headquarters

Ceremonial shovels of dirt were thrown in Sandy Springs on Monday. The new Mercedez-Benz headquarters will take two years and an estimated $93 million to complete.

"He's somebody who gets it," Gov. Nathan Deal said in his introduction of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. "He's somebody who really understands what it takes for business to be successful. And he also understands what it takes for communities to be able to attract successful businesses."

The mutual adoration continued when Reed took the stage. "This is an amazing partnership," Reed said. "I think it says so many things about the economy of Georgia. The things that Gov. Nathan Deal did to show that Georgia is a business-friendly state."

Reed and Deal lined up beside Mercedes-Benz leadership for the ceremonial shoveling dirt photo op.

The new headquarters at the corner of Abernathy and Barfield Road is located on a 12-acre campus. The four-story building will be 225,000 sq. feet.

The company first announced its plan to relocate from Montvale, New jersey in February 2015. They officially relocated to a temporary facility in Dunwoody five months later. The new headquarters should be completed in early 2018.
