Snellville — Greta Cochran Coble has been keeping students safe on Skyland Drive for decades.

On Wednesday, she'll hold her stop sign for the last time before passing along her post.

Coble, who calls her students 'customers,' has served as a crossing guard for 47 years. Not only does Coble escort students at both South Gwinnett High School and Britt Elementary School each day, she also worked in the elementary school's lunchroom.

The 77-year-old Snellville resident has even greater connections to the high school. Coble was part of the school's first graduating class in 1958.

"I've been doing it so long I can handle most anything," she told 11Alive News.

Next on her list? Working with her church and spending time with family. Plus, Coble said she has a garden that needs her time and attention.

"Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) would like to thank Ms. Greta Coble for nearly five decades of service as a crossing guard and cafeteria worker," a district spokesperson said. "She is one of 522 veteran GCPS employees retiring this year and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
