ATLANTA -- The city of Atlanta has issued a proclamation honoring a woman celebrating a special milestone.

Dorothy H. Speer is turning 100 on Thursday.

Born on February 8, 1918, in Madison, GA. Speer is a current and oldest member of Paradise Missionary Baptist Church on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in Atlanta. She joined the church at the age of 16 when it was Reed Street Baptist Church under the fifth Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ralph Riley.

Speer was a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years in the children's department. She has been a mentor and a role model throughout the years and huge advocate for the youth.

She made her own clothes and hats and even presented a fashion show at church where she modeled all of her own creations. She still wears heels to church with her hats and beautiful outfits.

She was a hairstylist who volunteered at the Cancer Society and would do patients hair as well. She has always been a caring and loving person and she was the caretaker for her brother and sisters as well.

"Sister Speer always said what she meant and meant what she said," said Samantha Sims, a member of her church. "She did not like confusion and would not be a part of it. She was not big on formal groups, she just did her part to serve God."

The celebration will be held at Paradise Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, February 11, 2018, immediately following service which will be between 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m.
